No matter what roofing material you have on your home, it’s susceptible to fire damage. That’s one reason why the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends that your grill is at least 10 feet from your home. As a roofing company specializing in roof repair, we’ve seen a lot of fire damage to homes and especially roofing systems. Here are some parts of your roofing system your grill can damage.
Fascia and Soffit
Your home’s fascia may or may not be a fire-resistant material. In fact, most often fascia board is made of either wood or a composite material, both of which can easily burn. We’ve seen vinyl fascia melt from just the heat of a grill.
Because the most affordable soffit material is vinyl, it’s susceptible to damage from the heat of the grill and fire. Your soffit helps your roof to breath and if it melts and the holes close up, your roof may begin to grow mold or mildew, especially in our humid summers. If either your fascia or soffits catch fire, your home is at risk. At the very least you’re going to need a roofing company to replace the damaged joists, roof deck, soffits, and fascia which can add up quickly.
Gutters
Although most gutters today are aluminum, some are vinyl. Just like vinyl soffits, gutters will melt with the heat from a grill even if the flame never reaches them. Gutters made from a more fire-resistant material, like aluminum or copper can still pose a fire hazard. If your gutters are full of dry leaves and other debris and a spark from your grill drops into the gutter, a fire can easily ignite and quickly spread throughout your home.
The Roof
Although most asphalt shingles are Class A fire resistant, that doesn’t mean fire proof. Metal and tile roofing withstand errant sparks better than asphalt but can still catch fire. The key is to keep your grill or fire pit far enough from your home that a spark or errant flame won’t do damage.
