Don’t be fooled into thinking that your attic insulation isn’t important because you live in Florida. In fact, it may be more important in Florida than many other parts of the U.S. If you haven’t been in your attic to check on yours, today’s blog may get you to heat up there and take a look.

What Attic Insulation Does in Warm & Humid Climates

Too many people think that attic insulation’s only purpose is to keep their home from getting cold. In fact, it does a lot more. Your attic insulation helps regulate the temperature in your attic, whether it’s hot or cold. When you take a shower, the humidity in your bathroom needs somewhere to go. One place it tries to go is into your attic. When you have good insulation, it prevents moisture from getting into your attic.

Of course, in the hot summer months it keeps your home from getting hot. If you’ve ever been in your attic in the summer, you know it’s ten to twenty degrees warmer than the exterior temperatures. Imagine if you didn’t have insulation that all that heat would make its way into your home.

What Does “Right” Insulation Mean?

Different parts of the country have different recommendations for the right amount of insulation. One thing that holds true across the country is that once your insulation gets wet, it is no longer effective. If you’ve had a roof leak, or have a roof leak, you need to replace your insulation at least in the affected area.

Homes built before about 1980 don’t have the current recommended amount of insulation. If you haven’t checked if your home does, here is a link to current recommendations and how to tell if you have the right amount.
