Whether you’re looking at asphalt shingles, metal roofing, or tile roofing, you will have many styles to choose from. In fact, if you don’t know what type of roof you want, you may be overwhelmed by your options. Although some homeowners’ associations dictate the material, style, and in some cases, color of your roof, sometimes you have options. If you live in an area where you can choose, it’s best to first start with the material and then choose the right roofing style. Here are some tips no matter what material you want for your home’s roof.
Coordinate with Your Home’s Architecture
Because your roof is a highly visible element of your home, you want it to compliment the home’s style. Many homes in our area have a Spanish or Mediterranean influence. If yours does, consider a roofing style that reflects that style like a barrel or s-style metal or tile roofing. A modern home can have almost any style but most often we see traditional architectural shingles or flat concrete tile roofing. Older historic homes look best with a scalloped shingle like GAF’s Sienna series.
Personal Preference
Your personal preference will influence the style shingle you choose. Just be careful to not go too far outside the style of the homes in the rest of the neighborhood or you may find it difficult to sell your home when the time comes. It’s better to have a roof that blends into the neighborhood rather than stands out like it doesn’t belong. If you’re stuck trying to choose between a few options, look at the colors available in each one and select the style based on the one that has the color you love.
Budget
Perhaps the biggest reason homeowners choose one roofing style over another is the cost. Basic architectural shingles are cheaper than a shingle made to mimic slate or wood shake. Of course, metal roofing and tile roofing are more expensive than shingles but last longer and require less maintenance. You’ll find that tile roofing has a larger selection of styles than metal but that asphalt has the biggest selection.
